Moon & solunar: a planning aid, not a promise

Many anglers plan around the moon — new and full moons, and the ‘major’ and ‘minor’ feeding windows of solunar theory, tend to line up with stronger tides and more active fish. Treat it as one more input for picking your day, not a guarantee: the fish never read the tables.

Common questions

Do I need a California fishing license?

Anglers 16 and older need a valid California sport fishing license for ocean trips. Buy at wildlife.ca.gov or a licensed agent — and watch out for copycat websites that charge extra for the same license.

Where do I check size and bag limits?

The CDFW ocean sport-fishing regulations page above. Limits and seasons change, so check the current rules before every trip — never rely on last season’s memory.

What is a Marine Protected Area?

State-designated zones where fishing is restricted or prohibited. CDFW publishes maps and brochures — check them before fishing a new spot.

When is the best tide to fish?

Many anglers prefer moving water — the hours around tide changes — over slack tide. Check NOAA’s official predictions for your harbor and plan from there.
