California Rockfish Season 2026: Southern California Dates, Depths & Limits

Rockfish are SoCal's most reliable table fish β€” but the season now runs on rotating depth windows that confuse even regulars. Here is the 2026 Southern California picture in plain English.

Rockfish are the backbone of Southern California bottom fishing β€” the reds, bocaccio, and bank rockfish that fill coolers and make fish tacos happen. They are also, lately, the most confusing fishery on the coast to plan around. Since 2024 the Southern California season has run on a rotating set of depth windows: months when you may only fish shallow, months when you may only fish deep, and a full winter closure. This guide lays out the 2026 Southern California season β€” the waters from Point Conception to the Mexican border, including Catalina and the Channel Islands β€” in plain English, so you can book the right trip in the right month.

Plain-English disclaimer: this is a planning summary of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recreational groundfish rules for the Southern Groundfish Management Area, not the regulation text itself. Groundfish rules can change in-season. Always confirm current regulations with CDFW before a trip β€” and know that your captain checks them before every departure.

The 2026 season at a glance (Southern California)

DatesStatusWhat it means on the water
Jan 1 – Mar 31ClosedNo boat-based rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, or greenling fishing.
Apr 1 – Jun 30Open, all depthsThe classic season: shallow and deep spots both legal, all rockfish species groups open.
Jul 1 – Sep 30Open, inshore onlyFishing allowed shoreward of the 50-fathom Rockfish Conservation Area boundary line.
Oct 1 – Dec 31Open, offshore onlyFishing allowed seaward of the 50-fathom line β€” and only shelf and slope rockfish plus lingcod may be kept. Nearshore rockfish, cabezon, and greenling must be released.

The opener β€” April 1 β€” is one of the biggest days on the SoCal fishing calendar, and the spring all-depths window that follows is prime time: three months with no depth strings attached. Our seasonal fishing calendar shows how rockfish season overlaps with everything else that is biting.

Why the depth windows flip

The inshore/offshore rotation exists to spread fishing pressure across rockfish stocks. Some species β€” copper rockfish and vermilion rockfish in particular β€” were being caught faster than they could replace themselves, especially in comfortable shallow water. By pushing the summer fishery inshore of the 50-fathom line (roughly 300 feet of water) and the fall fishery outside it, regulators give each depth zone a rest for part of the year. It is genuinely confusing the first time you hear it, which is why it matters that your captain fishes these rules daily β€” on a charter, staying legal is the crew's job, not yours.

Bag limits: the numbers to know

  • RCG complex (rockfish, cabezon, greenling): 10 fish per angler per day, combined. There is no minimum size for rockfish β€” but small fish released carefully are next year's keepers.
  • Sub-limits inside that 10: copper rockfish β€” 1 fish; vermilion and sunset rockfish β€” 2 fish combined (the two are now managed as one); canary rockfish β€” 2 fish.
  • Prohibited: cowcod, yelloweye rockfish, and bronzespotted rockfish may not be taken at all β€” learn to recognize them, or ask the crew before anything goes in the sack.
  • Lingcod are separate: 2 fish per angler, 22-inch minimum, on top of your rockfish limit β€” and in the Oct–Dec offshore window, lingcod are one of the main legal targets.

If filleting happens on board, rockfish fillets must keep the entire skin attached β€” one more detail the crew handles as routine.

Planning a trip around the windows

Spring (Apr–Jun): the easiest planning of the year. All depths are open, so a 3/4-day coastal trip or an island run can fish whatever depth is producing β€” shallow vermilion spots one hour, deep-water reds the next. This is the window for a classic "rockcod trip," and it stacks beautifully with the start of bass and barracuda season.

Summer (Jul–Sep): inshore-only sounds limiting, and honestly it changes tactics more than results: shallower structure, lighter tackle, and a mixed bag of rockfish with calico bass and bonito around the kelp. At the islands it barely cramps anyone's style β€” see how it fits into a summer Catalina trip.

Fall (Oct–Dec): offshore-only means deeper drops and longer runs β€” the domain of full-day trips and the bigger grade of shelf rockfish and lingcod. If you like vertical jigging in 300+ feet and the chance of a trophy ling, this is your season. Our rock cod fishing tips cover the tackle and technique for exactly this fishing.

Winter (Jan–Mar): rockfish rest, and so does the planning β€” switch targets to bass, halibut, and (through mid-March) lobster, all covered in our Los Angeles fishing seasons guide.

Party boat or private charter for rockfish?

Both work β€” it is a question of depth choice and group size. Party boats run rockfish trips on a set program; a private charter lets the captain choose the depth zone and species focus for your group, and move when a spot is picked clean. Our party boat vs. private charter guide breaks down the trade-offs honestly. Either way, when you plan a trip with us, tell us rockfish are the target and we will match the boat to the window you are fishing in.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does rockfish season open in Southern California in 2026?

When is rockfish season closed in California?

In Southern California, boat-based fishing for rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, and greenling is closed January 1 through March 31. The season then runs April 1 through December 31, with depth restrictions that change by quarter.

What is the 50-fathom rule for rockfish?

From July 1 to September 30 you may only fish shoreward (inshore) of the 50-fathom Rockfish Conservation Area boundary line. From October 1 to December 31 it flips: fishing is allowed only seaward of the line, and only shelf and slope rockfish and lingcod may be kept.

How many rockfish can I keep in California?

The RCG complex limit is 10 fish per angler per day in combination, with sub-limits: 1 copper rockfish, 2 vermilion/sunset rockfish combined, and 2 canary rockfish. Cowcod, yelloweye, and bronzespotted rockfish are prohibited. Lingcod are a separate limit: 2 fish, 22 inches or longer.
