Fish counts are the single best planning tool in Southern California sportfishing β if you know what the numbers actually mean. Here's how to read them without getting fooled.
Every serious Southern California angler checks the fish counts before booking β and every beginner misreads them at least once. The numbers are simple, but what they mean takes some decoding. Here's how to read them like someone who's been doing it for years.
A fish count lists, per boat per day: the number of anglers aboard and the catch by species. A typical line reads something like: 28 anglers β 56 yellowtail, 40 calico bass, 12 barracuda. Landings post them in the afternoon or evening after boats return β see our fish counts hub for every major SoCal landing's live page.
Raw totals mislead. Divide fish by anglers:
Big totals of rockfish mean bottom fishing is on. Yellowtail and white seabass in the mix mean the surface bite is alive. Bonito and barracuda everywhere means fun, fast action β great for beginners and kids. Match the mix to what you want to catch, and cross-check the seasonal calendar.
The play: check the hub for your target zone, scan a week of per-angler averages, confirm the species mix matches your goals, check the weather window β then move fast, because everyone else is reading the same counts. When you're ready, Plan a Trip and tell us what the counts are showing; we'll match you with the right boat when booking opens.
A fish count is the landing's daily report of what each boat caught: number of anglers aboard and the number of each species landed. Landings publish them most afternoons and evenings after trips return.
Limits means the boat averaged the legal bag limit per angler β a full-speed day. 'Near limits' or high per-angler averages (e.g., 8 yellowtail per rod) signal excellent fishing.
Weather, currents, water temperature, boat pressure, and plain luck. One hot day doesn't make a trend β look at a week of counts for a landing to see the real pattern.
Landings publish their own counts daily. Our fish counts hub links every major SoCal landing's live count page in one place.
