California Fishing Regions

California has over 840 miles of coastline and some of the most diverse sportfishing on the planet β€” bluefin tuna off San Diego, white seabass in the kelp, salmon under the Golden Gate. Spirit started in Southern California, and today we help anglers plan trips anywhere on the California coast.

Below is a planning overview. For day-to-day action see the live statewide fish counts; for legal size and bag limits always confirm with CDFW ocean regulations before you go.

Southern California β€” Santa Barbara to San Diego

Our home water, and the most varied fishing in the state. Kelp-bed calico and sand bass, halibut on the sandy flats, yellowtail and white seabass when the water warms, and offshore tuna β€” including bluefin β€” on longer runs. Catalina and the Channel Islands put island fishing within day-trip range.

Signature species: yellowtail, white seabass, calico bass, halibut, rockfish, bonito, barracuda, bluefin & yellowfin tuna.

Central Coast β€” Morro Bay to Santa Cruz

Cold, nutrient-rich water over rocky structure: this is rockfish and lingcod country, with halibut in the bays and salmon passing through in season. A different rhythm from SoCal β€” more weather-dependent, fewer crowds, and famously big reds and lings.

Signature species: rockfish, lingcod, California halibut, salmon (seasonal), albacore (late summer, offshore).

Key ports: Morro Bay, Port San Luis, Monterey, Santa Cruz.

Northern California β€” San Francisco Bay to Eureka

Salmon, halibut, and crab define NorCal. The Bay itself offers excellent halibut and striped bass fishing, while the outer coast delivers rockfish and lingcod β€” and in season, Dungeness crab trips that double as dinner.

Signature species: Chinook salmon (seasonal), California halibut, striped bass, rockfish, lingcod, Dungeness crab (seasonal).

Key ports: San Francisco, Berkeley, Emeryville, Bodega Bay, Fort Bragg, Eureka.
