Yellowtail Fishing Techniques That Actually Work

Yellowtail are the fish Southern California anglers dream about β€” fast, strong, and picky. Here are the five techniques that put mossbacks on the deck, and when to use each one.

Few things in Southern California fishing match the moment a yellowtail eats. One second you're winding, the next your rod is doubled over and line is screaming off the reel. Yellows are fast, powerful, and famously finicky β€” which is why technique matters more than luck. Here are the five approaches that consistently produce, from the islands to the offshore paddies.

1. Fly-lined live sardine

The finesse play. A nose-hooked sardine on light fluorocarbon leader, cast out and left to swim naturally β€” no weight, no hardware, just a bait doing what bait does. When yellowtail are keyed on bait but ignoring iron, this is what fools them. Use the lightest line you can get away with (often 20–25 lb), keep your bait lively, and be ready: the bite is usually a sudden, violent run.

2. Yo-yo iron

The power play. Drop a heavy jig β€” the classic Salas 6X or Tady 4/0 in scrambled egg or blue/white β€” straight to the bottom (or to the depth the meter marks fish), then wind back as fast as humanly possible. Yellowtail can't resist a fleeing baitfish. This is the go-to when fish are deep, and on party boats it's the great equalizer: simple, effective, and it works when nothing else does.

3. Surface iron

The glory play. When yellowtail are up top β€” boiling on bait, crashing the surface β€” nothing beats a surface jig (Tady 45, Salas 7X) cast long and burned back. The strikes are visual and explosive. This is sight-fishing at its most exciting, and it's why anglers obsess over "the jig bite."

4. Dropper loop

The structure play. Around island kelp, boiler rocks, and wrecks where yellows hold tight, a dropper loop with a live sardine or mackerel keeps your bait in the zone. Heavier gear, shorter casts, and the patience to wait for the thump.

5. Slow-trolled mackerel

The offshore play. Around kelp paddies and temperature breaks, slow-trolling a live mackerel covers water and finds roaming schools. It's the standard technique on offshore runs when the fish are scattered.

Where and when

Catalina Island (front side kelp, the west end, Farnsworth Bank) and San Clemente Island are the classic yellowtail arenas, with offshore kelp paddies producing in late summer. Season generally runs late spring through fall β€” check our seasonal calendar and learn how to read fish counts to time your trip for the bite.

Gear notes

Bring (or confirm the boat has): 25–40 lb outfits for bait, a 40–50 lb yo-yo setup, and a surface-iron rod if you own one. Fluorocarbon leaders in 20–30 lb make a real difference with picky fish. And whatever you do β€” when the captain says "wind," wind like your trip depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best technique for yellowtail?

There's no single best technique β€” it depends on conditions. Fly-lined live sardines fool picky fish; yo-yo iron reaches deep fish fast; surface iron shines when yellows are boiling; dropper loop holds deep structure; slow-trolled mackerel covers water offshore.

What is yo-yo fishing for yellowtail?

Yo-yo is dropping a heavy iron jig (like a Salas 6X) straight down and cranking it back as fast as you can. It triggers reaction strikes from deep yellowtail β€” brutally effective and brutally tiring.

When is yellowtail season in Southern California?

Typically late spring through fall, peaking in summer. Catalina Island, San Clemente Island, and offshore kelp paddies are the main arenas. Check the fishing calendar and fish counts for current conditions.

Can beginners catch yellowtail?

Yes β€” on the right day, with the right captain. Yellowtail fishing can be technical, so tell your captain it's a target species when you plan your trip and they'll put you in the best position.
