Lake & River Fishing Starter Guide

Not every great fishing day happens in the ocean. These are three of Southern California's best freshwater bets β€” general guidance to get you started. Regulations change, so always check the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the lake's own rules before you go.

Castaic Lake

About an hour north of Los Angeles, Castaic is SoCal's bass factory β€” largemouth bass plus hard-fighting striped bass. Shore fishing is good at the upper lake; boat rentals open up the main lake. Spring and fall are prime; summer means early mornings.

Santa Ana River Lakes

A private, pay-to-fish lake in Anaheim known for heavily stocked trout in the cooler months and catfish in summer. Because it's private, check their current admission, stocking schedule, and rules before heading out.

Big Bear Lake

A mountain-lake escape at 6,700 feet, about two hours from LA. Rainbow trout are the main draw, with bass and catfish too. Summer is peak season; weather swings fast at altitude, so bring layers even in July.

Licenses & limits: anglers 16 and older need a valid California sport fishing license at public waters; private lakes set their own rules. Know the size and bag limits for your target species β€” they exist so the fishing stays good.
