How does Spirit Sportfishing work?

We're a charter concierge, not a booking engine. Email info@spiritsportfishing.com with your date, party size, target species, and budget. A real person compares your trip against our vetted partner boats across Southern California and replies β€” usually within a day β€” with a personal recommendation and a clear quote. No account, no spam, no fee to you.

How much does a trip cost?

Every trip is quote-based, because the price depends on the boat, trip length, party size, season, and departure port. Email us your trip idea and we'll give you the full price up front β€” no hidden fees, your quote is your price. Our pricing guide explains what drives the cost.

What's included in the trip?

Most partner trips include rods, reels, bait, and tackle. Your match email spells out exactly what's included for your specific trip β€” license, food, fish cleaning, and gratuity are usually separate. When in doubt, ask: we'd rather over-explain than surprise you.

Do I need a California fishing license?

Yes β€” anglers 16 and older need a valid California sport fishing license for ocean trips; kids under 16 don't. Buy one online from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife ahead of time, or at most landings the morning of. Bring it on the boat.

What happens after I email you?

A human reads your email (usually the same day) and replies with a matched boat and captain, the trip details, and a quote. If your date doesn't work, we'll suggest the closest alternatives. Nothing is booked β€” and nothing is charged β€” until you confirm.

Do I pay Spirit or the boat operator?

The operator's deposit and cancellation terms apply, and we confirm them in writing before you pay anything. There's no fee to you for the matching β€” our commission is paid by the operator.

What happens if weather cancels my trip?

The captain makes the call β€” safety first, always. If your trip is weathered out, you reschedule or get your deposit back under the operator's written terms, which you see before you pay. We'll help you rebook.

Can I bring kids? What if we've never fished?

Absolutely. A half-day local trip on calm water is the perfect first trip β€” short, mellow, and the crew loves teaching. Tell us ages and experience level and we'll pick a kid-friendly boat.

I get seasick. Should I still go?

Many people do fine with preparation: take motion-sickness remedy the night before AND the morning of (once you're sick it's too late), eat breakfast, stay hydrated, and choose a half-day trip on calm water. If you're worried, tell us β€” we'll steer you to the mellowest option.

Do you own the boats?

No β€” that's the point. Instead of selling you seats on one boat, we match you to the best boat for your trip from our vetted partners: 6-pack private charters, party boats, Catalina runs, and multi-day trips.

How far ahead should I plan?

Summer weekends typically go 2–4 weeks out; weekdays often have room within days. Email early for the best pick of boats and dates β€” it costs nothing to ask.
