Beginner's Guide to Saltwater Fishing

Never fished the ocean? Perfect β€” some of our favorite trips are first-timers. Here's everything you need to know before you step on the boat.

Party boat vs. private charter

Party boats (also called open-party or shared trips) take 20–60 anglers. They are affordable, social, and the crew helps everyone β€” ideal for a first trip. Private charters are your group only: more space, more attention from the crew, and the captain fishes your agenda. See top party boats by landing β†’

What to bring

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat β€” the water reflects sun back at you
  • Layers: mornings are cold even in summer; boat wind is real
  • Rubber-soled, non-marking shoes
  • Motion-sickness remedy before boarding (see below)
  • Cooler for your fillets on the way home
  • Valid California fishing license (or confirm the landing covers you)

Don't feed the fish (seasickness tips)

  • Take motion-sickness medicine the night before and morning of β€” once you're sick, it's too late
  • Stay on deck in fresh air; keep your eyes on the horizon
  • Eat a normal breakfast β€” an empty stomach is worse
  • Skip heavy grease and excess alcohol the night before

How the fishing actually works

On most SoCal trips the crew does the hard part: finding the fish. Your job is simple β€” drop your bait where the deckhand says, wait for the bite, and reel steadily. When you hook up, follow your fish around the rail and listen to the crew. They want you to land it as much as you do.

Common setups you'll hear about: fly-lining a live anchovy or sardine with no weight, and a dropper loop for bottom fish. Don't memorize anything β€” the crew will rig you up.

Boat etiquette in 30 seconds

  • Listen to the deckhands β€” their instructions keep tangles (and tempers) down
  • Don't cast over other people's lines; drop straight down when it's crowded
  • Tip the crew: 15–20% of the trip price is customary for good service
  • Keep the rail clear and watch your footing β€” decks get slippery

What happens to your catch?

Most landings offer filleting for a small per-fish fee when you return β€” you go home with bagged fillets, ready for the pan. Ask the crew about it during the ride back so you're not scrambling at the dock.

Size and bag limits apply to most species β€” the crew knows the current rules, and you can always check CDFW ocean regulations.

Bringing kids?

Kids do great on half-day trips: short, calm, and full of action on smaller fish. Tell us their ages when you plan your trip and we'll match you with a kid-friendly boat and crew.

Ready to fish? Tell us your date, party size, and what you want to catch β€” we will match you with the right boat and captain anywhere in California. Plan your trip or call (310) 622-2830.
